It was a hot rainy
day when she told me. I was 13. She’s ten years older than I am, my birthday
being in Sept and my aunt’s being in November. He was supposed to be here in
April, a spring baby. It was all really exciting to all of us. The last baby
that was born was my youngest brother Noah and that was nine years ago. So, it was about time for another little
bundle of joy to be put in the family.
She was already a month into her pregnancy when she told everyone,
starting with me. I remember how scared she was to tell me. We had gone to
lunch at some old sandwich place that I had never been before and never gone
back. She kept playing with her napkin and straw paper, I could tell something
was up, but I didn’t ask. For a good while we talked about how I don’t want to
go to school in the next couple weeks and the top songs on the radio. Right
before the food got to the table she told me. At first I didn’t know what to
say, I just smiled. It must have been a pretty big smile because she said “So
you’re happy? I’m glad.” Of course I was happy! I get to have a little baby
cousin. For the rest of the lunch we talked about baby names and if she wanted
a boy or a girl. After wards, we went to
my grandmothers house. All that I really remember is that she cried so happily
it made my aunt cry too. She called everyone else some laughing, some crying,
some being very judgmental because she wasn’t married. But that didn’t change
anything, Mathew was going to come into this world surrounded by hope and love.
